History of Europe

The history of Europe presents an interesting story of the rise and fall of the various empires. The birth of the Western thoughts of democratic and individualistic ideas is mostly attributed to the country of Ancient Greece, although various other influences, like that of Christianity, egalitarianism and the universality of law, are also attributed for the dispersal of these concepts. A proper assessment of the history of Europe reveals the role of the various eras that have given Europe its present state.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe started to enter a lengthy period of transformations starting from where it is called the Age of Migrations. The Renaissance philosophers have attributed that period as that of the "Dark Ages". The isolated communities of Ireland, Scotland and of other places have carefully documented all information carefully. At this time, the Holy Roman Empire was born from the western section of the Roman Empire.
The east of this empire came to be known as the Byzantine Empire. The 'Byzantines' identify themselves more with the Romans and prefer to be known as the 'Empire of the Romans'. In 1453, the Byzantine Empire came to an end as the Ottoman Empire vanquished Constantinople, the capital of Byzantine. This lasted till 1461.

The Renaissance as well as the new rulers started the era that was marked by discovery, exploration, as well as scientific exploration. Portugal entered the era of inventions and discoveries during the 15th century and Spain followed suit. Later countries like France, the Netherlands and England followed them in acquiring huge imperialist empires with large stakes in Africa, the United States and Asia.

After this the era of evolution of democracy in Europe begun. France started with the struggle for independence with its famous French Revolution. This revolutionary ideas set fire to Europe's political situation with every other country rising in revolt. A new type of tension was generated. This got culminated after Napoleon Bonaparte set out to conquer an empire for himself. However, his dream French Empire was soon dismantled. Then the Industrial Revolution begun, starting from Great Britain it spread all over Europe. Europe became the theater for both the world wars as well as the Cold War and now with the formation of the European Union Europe has become somewhat stabilized.
